Philosophy Throughout the growth of DB's practice, we have approached potential projects with the query, "Can it be built?" When considering new opportunities we always ask ourselves, at the very least, what is the likelihood that the project will result in tangible structures or artifacts, and how securely will our design efforts be grounded in the real world? For us, fabrication is the most useful test of conceptualism.
As practitioners, we have also proactively expanded the rules of business development for our firm. We have cultivated relationships with developers and independent sources of financing, giving us a greater degree of control over both our projects in general, increasing the likelihood of realization. We have acted as developers ourselves, for both affordable housing and market-rate construction. We have engaged the field of product design, partnering with an Italian furniture company to create custom products for several real estate development properties, including our own. We are also in the process of obtaining a patent for a modular furniture system, developed for our own office utilizing a CNC milling machine, in lieu of choosing something off the shelf. The diversity of our practice is rooted in a constant and proactive effort to invent and formulate projects for ourselves. All of our projects are devised through research and a strong philosophical stance that no project should mimic one that came before it. While technical strategies and solutions may re-appear, each project's parti is inherently related to the specifics and differences of site and client. While this is not an earth-shattering pronouncement, this lack of an overarching signature is, ironically, liberating. It breeds variety. Our imprint is visible in a consistent sensitivity to material, to invention, to utility, and to execution. We believe in consistency but not in homogeneity. |
