Firm History
Bruce Dean Nagel was born in 1949 in San Antonio, TX. He received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Texas in 1973, and after a period of apprenticeship in Boston, studied for and received his Master of Architecture from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University in 1976.
Mr. Nagel has worked on many celebrated projects, such as the Faneuil Hall Marketplace project at Benjamin Thompson and Associates in Cambridge, MA in 1973, residential and institutional projects with Richard Meier and Partners from 1977 to 1979, and as senior associate at Gwathmey Siegel and Associates for six years where he worked on numerous public and private award-winning projects.
Mr. Nagel taught architecture at the Boston Architectural Center in 1975. Since that time, he has served as guest critic and juror at the architecture schools of several leading universities, including Columbia, Yale, Harvard, The University of Pennsylvania, and The University of Virginia.
Each project is a unique project, because I place primary emphasis on a client-related solution, on its particular fit and suitability.
As an initial step, I request that clients record a written program describing their goals for the project and eliciting their wants and needs in as much detail as they wish. While this program is inevitably altered in the course of working out a solution, the particular tenor of my client's initial program remains a keynote throughout my design process.
I want each project to acquire through this program keynote a strong, clear idea, which is consistent with its organization. I strive thereby to functionally satisfy my client's detailed needs and to give them something more, something that only architecture can give them, as well.
In my original work on new projects, I have a strong design aesthetic, but I am also particularly respectful of existing vocabularies in performing remodelings, where I direct my efforts toward producing sensitively integrated designs.
My background includes institutional, commercial and residential projects of all scales, from major residences and commercial interiors to university buildings and urban centers, obtained while working both with previous partners and practitioners now widely known in the profession.
My practice includes a range of both residential and institutional projects, as well as commercial work, and encompasses significant projects outside of Long Island.
I am a full-service practice, one that stresses a responsive, original solution to each project, detailed construction documents and attentive overview of construction.
