Design Philosphy
Eric Liftin founded MESH Architectures in 1997 and designs in a range of scales including buildings, homes, offices, retail spaces, lighting and art installations. MESH's work explores how the digital world is restructuring relationships between people and their environments. This new hyper-connectivity is changing how we design and live.
The firm is always exploring new materials and technologies. In New York, where many projects are renovations, MESH has successfully integrated contemporary materials and techniques into old structures without erasing the older construction. The firm has established a reputation for using new, translucent materials to create luminous spaces. In the Vertical Loft House MESH used a skylight to bring light into the core of the brownstone. Translucent stair treads allow the light to filter through to the lower floors.
Along with innovative design goes a dedication to a client-oriented process. Successful projects are always the result of a fruitful collaboration of the client’s desires and the architect’s ingenuity. MESH puts attention to the client’s requirements ahead of stylistic concerns, believing that this process leads to innovative solutions that satisfy the body, spirit, and budget while pleasing the eye.
Residential projects incorporate new concepts for living. Homes are conceived of as microcosmic urban spaces, a setting for activities and events ranging from solitary meditation to family breakfast to work meetings. MESH sees the connected areas of the home as a stimulating environment for personal and interpersonal exploration and growth. New materials play with translucency and color. Movable elements enable spontaneous reprogramming. Digital technologies connect the home to the infinite space of the Internet beyond, actually integrating the Net into architectural space.
Recently the firm has expanded its scope, designing larger-scale international projects. MESH designed a 10-story, $35 million office building in Seoul, Korea. In New York, MESH has worked with real estate developers and organizations to investigate, plan, and design bold, new renovations and buildings. MESH excels at in-depth zoning analyses and feasibility studies, and can carry a project through design and construction. Using sustainable strategies, MESH will reduce maintenance costs and the overall environmental footprint of a project.
