Design Philosophy

Marpillero Pollak Architects is committed to the power of architecture to transform built and natural environments. This commitment is part of an approach to design that challenges conventional solutions and seeks to transform liabilities into benefits, to realize the maximum potential of a given project. MPA's creative approach to a project begins with a site's existing conditions and its history, including previous planning frameworks. These qualitative parameters may inform distribution of program, integration of environmental concerns, infrastructural connections, relationships between inside and outside, the role of natural and artificial light, and architectural detailing.

MPA is experienced in integrating social, environmental, and cultural aspects of a project into innovative and technically responsible design solutions. We implement our skills and knowledge in architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design to produce a richness that extends beyond economic and functional criteria.

MPA's projects in the United States and elsewhere have received honors and acclaim for the skill with which they redefine their context while supporting new development and amenities, especially in underserved urban areas. Projects have received awards from the American Institute of Architects, the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Environmental Design Research Association, the AIA/HUD Community Building by Design, and Wood Design Awards.

To offer the fullest possible services to our clients, and keep our agility as a small to medium sized firm, MPA works with consultants whose expertise enhances our capabilities to handle projects of any size.
