An urban liability becomes an asset when a dreary, foreboding and forgotten underpass is transformed by lighting into a sparkling retail destination. Adjacent to the Jamaica AirTrain Station, the Shops at Station Plaza along Sutphin Boulevard sprang to life this year with DGA’s dynamic treatment of the roadway, retail frontages and adjacent walkway. Energy efficient metal halide, LF and LED luminaires are controlled in response to natural light and seasonal themes, as well as to prolong lamp life. Multiple options presented to the Greater Jamaica Development Corp. and the full gamut of City agencies including LIRR and NYC DOT led to this flexible, airy and welcoming civic space.
