A dignified art moderne building built in 1928 as an ophthalmic treatment and research center, the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute has continuously provided patient, research, and clinician ophthalmology services. A feasibility study defined building accessibility and life safety upgrades as well as selected building improvements. The design of these improvements respects the needs of visually impaired users: low-contrast flooring; high-contrast between horizontal and vertical surfaces; tactile differentiation of materials; and uniform, non-glare, indirect lighting. Cosmetic improvements create a consistent vocabulary for the lobby and ophthalmology clinic and elsewhere in the building. Terrazzo flooring, new lighting, wall coverings, light stone and warm wood surfaces, and canted walls open the lobby and allow form, light, and color to enhance user experience. Previously housed in the cellar, the ophthalmology clinic has been relocated to the first floor as a state-of-the-art practice. Multiple decants and infrastructure upgrades to building systems throughout complement the project.
