DSNY developed a new building to house three district garages. The multi-story facility in lower Manhattan accommodates over 150 sanitation vehicles, separate repair, vehicle wash, and personnel facilities for each district, and centralized fueling facilities. Located in SoHo, the design of the new facility emphasizes a sense of openness and relationship to the community, as well as an environmentally responsible approach.
ABB helped the overall design towards the goal of LEED Silver Certification. This involved developing an approximately 60,000 SF green roof for the facility. As an aesthetic component to the design, the green roof helps to soften views within the urban context. It also protects the waterproof membrane, enhances stormwater retention, and improves thermal performance. In addition to the green roof, ABB was responsible for the sidewalk landscape and site work for the exterior spaces. The design involved using linear planting beds with native grasses and trees to soften the urban hardscape, while also maximizing sidewalk space in this well-traveled area along the Hudson River, just opposite Hudson River Park.
