Historic Madison Square Park sits amid a thriving commercial and residential district. It is the home of a nineteenth-century sculpture collection and is regarded as a symbol of NYC’s history and culture. Over several decades, the park had fallen into a state of disrepair, with its original nineteenth-century design almost lost. ABB was selected to prepare the Design Development and Construction Documentation to return Madison Square Park to its former glory. ABB prepared complete bid documents within a 3.5-month period.
The restored park preserves the original 19th-century design while making the park an accessible and impressive modern public space. The central core of the park is strengthened by gently realigning the oval lawn, adding a wide granite curb, a perimeter ribbon of decorative benches, and closely spaced lighting. The ends of the core are anchored with fountain plazas: a shallow reflecting pool, a relocated Farragut Monument at the north, and a reconstructed fountain (based on a historic photo) at the south.
