The Drawing Center

The Drawing Center’s renovated space is 9,000 sf with 50% more gallery and programming space than they had previously. The main architectural plan connects a new ground floor bookstore, visitor area, and galleries to office spaces on the second floor and a renovated basement. The new lower level includes a room dedicated to art education, a conference room for artists and curators, and The Lab, which features a media system for exhibitions and public programs. This allows the museum to provide artists, students, and visitors with the facilities to further explore issues raised by the dynamic and evolving drawing medium well into the 21st century. 

 

With a more permanent set of elements including built-in features, glass distraction markers, wall graphics, LCD screens, and lighting effects, the design aimed to create an interactive and interchangeable environment, providing sensory experiences and provoking visual excitement. In order to create a relationship throughout the four story office, the installation explored themes that developed over the sequence of the floors.
