20 Henry Street, a new condominium building in Brooklyn Heights, will be located on a site historically a part of the Mason Mint candy factory. The Mason Mint building was converted to artists’ lofts in the 1970’s, and the remainder of the site was developed as a garden for art exhibitions. New owners have proposed to convert the factory building into luxury condominiums, and to construct a new building housing 12 new condominium units. The new building provides access to both a new garden and the existing factory building.
The new garden has been designed to extend from the ground level up to a “green roof” on the new building. New decorative metal treillage and pergola will connect all parts of the open space. New benches will be added at the ground level, and an existing sculpture will be retained as a part of the new design.
The existing 1970’s façade of the Mason Mint building, designed by Lee Harris Pomeroy, will be retained and refurbished. Additional restoration work of the historic facades and 1970’s alteration will be undertaken by the owners. All of the work on the site underwent review and approval by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission through an extensive public hearing process.
