Directing most of their efforts to the upper three floors and leaving the basement untouched, Front Studio created two interlocking duplexes units that maintained the traditional and graciously proportioned parlor level rooms and allowed for an integrated series of living quarters. The modern stucco-clad addition at the rear of the townhouse encloses a kitchen and new staircase, creating a dramatic sky-lit passage to Tomoko’s remodeled bedroom. The simply framed wooden staircase leads to a wood portal that opens into the master suite. A dressing room in light larch tones and white lacquered paint complements the airiness of the second floor bedroom. The new enclosure breaks through the existing brick façade, filling the adjacent rooms with light and transforming the private identity of a traditional townhouse.
