Hunters Point South is envisioned as an international model of urban ecology and a world laboratory for innovative sustainable thinking. The project is a collaboration between Thomas Balsley Associates, the project Landscape Architect for the streetscape design, and ARUP, the Sustainability Engineer for the streetscape.
As the most ambitious streetscape project undertaken by the City of New York in decades, the design incorporates numerous sustainable initiatives, transforming it into a new urban ecological paradigm. The rare opportunity of creating a new neighborhood in this highly dense urban environment afforded the project a unique opportunity to merge sustainable streetscape design principles such as localized storm water treatment and ensuring the long term health of the trees with lofty sustainability goals such as reducing heat island effect and reducing our carbon footprint.
The integrated approach and fertile dialogue between the Thomas Balsley Associates, ARUP and the numerous regulatory agencies together at a single table has created a collaborative process, and a design, that has been unprecedented.
