INSCAPE, a new meditation concept, opened in Manhattan this week. Archi-Tectonics created this concept for owner Khajak Keledjian, and collaborated with him to develop a concept that could eventually be distributed internationally. The first PROTO space in Chelsea occupies a large ground floor level on 54 West 21street. The space contains a set of ellipsoid meditation spaces; a “Dome Room” and an “Alcove room”.
Meditation requires a different state of mind - a transition into a completely “other” space with an immersive light and sound environment can completely transform ones mood and state of mind, thus clearing it for the guest to be able to focus and concentrate. Already upon entering the main space, one feels calmer when moving through the living room with a soft atmosphere, created by natural linen seating, large floating ceiling lights and natural bamboo shelves and curved meditation rooms. The second, more dramatic, transition is found when one enters one of the mediation rooms, when an even more immersive environment envelops the visitors.
URBAN MEDITATION DESIGN // INSCAPE
Meditation Rooms - We designed soft ellipsoid spaces with spiraling bamboo ceilings, where soft colored lighting is guided through a linen ceiling. An important calming element is a low ring of light, a sort of “horizon” that helps settle the mind and helps ground the meditator. When one enters, the light has a calming color that during the meditation softly dims down to just the lower ring. An open oculus on the top symbolizes eternal space, and an opening of the mind. The space thus holds the guests in a warm embrace that makes one feel relaxed and comfortable. Specially designed seating elements support the guests in all poses helping them to balance and focus.
An important element of healthy living is created by natural materials that breathe and absorb humidity. Special aroma therapy filtration enhances a feeling of comfort. Soft gongs sound through the space and allow one’s thoughts to wander. A moment of respite in a busy city is created.
